WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY
DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
Academic Policies for Math
115-College Algebra, Math 116-Precalculus,
Math 160-Calculus I, Math 161- Calculus II
- ATTENDANCE POLICY
An attendance policy has been instituted by the Mathematics Department for students taking
any of the above listed courses. Your professor will be taking regular attendance. After
three (3) absences, a warning notice will be sent to the student and his/her advisor and
after five (5) absences, the student will receive an automatic grade of F.
In the latter case, the instructor is not required to grade any papers submitted by the
student.
- THE LEARNING CENTER FOR PRECALCULUS AND CALCULUS - S
107
The Learning Center will also tutor students in College Algebra as of Spring of 1998.
Students are encouraged to attend the Learning Center at least 3 times a week. Each study
session should be at least 1 hour. Students must get a "chit" recording the time
date and the tutor.
Additionally, some instructors may adhere to the following policy: Students may study in
groups in the WPU library or a local library, or the conference room S 143. If they
studied in the library, they need a signature of a librarian who witnessed their working
together or if is in S 143 the signature of faculty member, a student assistant or a
secretary is required. Discuss the applicability of this policy with your instructor. Each
session count as one (1) extra credit point toward their next exam for a maximum of ten
(10) points.
Students are reminded that the recommended time spent on homework is six (6) hours per
week for a three (3) credit course and eight (8) hours per week for a four (4) credit
course. Some students may have to spend more time.
- REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
The Department of Mathematics has approved requiring a TI 85 graphics calculator for the
above four courses. Those students who already have a TI 82 will probably be able to
perform all that is required if they read their manual.
- FINAL EXAM
The final exam for each of the above courses is a common exam and will be given on the day
assigned by the University for multisection courses. Your professor will arrange the time
for you class.
I have read and understood the academic policies, specifically those
regarding the attendance for the course that I have register for.
