Professor and Department Chair
Dr. Hayden holds a master’s degree in health education from Montclair State College and a doctorate in community health education from New York University. She is a registered nurse and a certified health education specialist. Dr. Hayden is the Department Chairperson and Director of the School Nurse Certification Program. Her interests and expertise are in professional preparation and credentialing. She teaches Health Education Theory and Practice, Human Disease, and Applied Program Planning.

RICHARD BLONNA, Ed.D., CHES
Professor
Dr. Blonna earned a master’s degree in counseling from Seton Hall University and a doctorate in health education with a specialty in health counseling from Temple University. Dr. Blonna is a certified health education specialist. His expertise is in sexually transmitted disease education, and stress management. He teaches Stress Management, Human Sexuality, Counseling for Health Professionals, and Current Health Issues.

JEWEL CARTER, DHsc, MPH, CHES
Assistant Professor
Dr. Carter holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of North Carolina and a doctorate of health science from NOVA Southeastern University. She is a certified health education specialist with broad community programming experience, having worked previously for the City of Newark. She teaches Drugs and Health, Current Health Issues, Methods in Community Health, and Community Health Program Planning.

William Kernan , Ed.D, MPA, CHES
Assistant Professor
Dr. Kernan holds masters degrees in health administration and health education as well as a doctorate from Columbia University with an emphasis in health psychology. Dr. Kernan is a certified health education specialist with expertise in college health promotion, behavioral counseling, health research methodology and stress/coping. As a former Peace Corps volunteer, he also has a special interest in global health issues. He teaches Health Research Methods, Cultural Dimensions of Health, and Current Health Issues.

MICHELE GRODNER, Ed.D., CHES
Professor
Dr. Grodner holds master’s degrees in community nutrition, and nutrition education as well as a doctorate in family and community education all from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is a certified health education specialist whose interests and expertise are in size acceptance, dieting and nutrition for nursing practice. Dr. Grodner is the Nutrition Concentration Coordinator. She teaches Nutrition, Community Nutrition Through the Lifespan, and Food and Nutrition: A Social Issues Approach.

DAPHNE JOSLIN, Ph.D.
Professor
Dr. Joslin earned a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University and a doctorate in sociology from New York University. Her interests and expertise are in gerontology, the study of aging and older adults, with a focus on care giving and grandparents raising grandchildren. She is the Principle Investigator for GRACIA, a grant funded community program for grandparents raising grandchildren. She teaches Concepts and Issues of Aging, Health Aspects of Aging, and Policies and Programs in Aging.

JEAN LEVITAN, Ph.D.
Professor
Dr. Levitan received both her masters and doctoral degrees from New York University in health education with a specialization in human sexuality. Her interests and expertise are in women's health and sexuality education. She is an affiliated faculty member in the Women ’s Studies Department. Dr. Levitan teaches Human Sexuality, Women's Health, Reproductive Rights, Current Health Issues, and First Year Seminar.

STUART LISBE, Ed.D.
Professor Dr. Lisbe received his master’s degree in health education from City College of New York and his doctorate in health, physical education, and recreation from the State University of New York, at Buffalo. Dr. Lisbe founded the Department in 1973 and served as its chairperson for more than 20 years. His interests are in sexuality education, and general counseling. Dr. Lisbe teaches Human Sexuality, and Methods, Curriculum and Theory in School Health Education.

Lucille Young- Talbot, MS, CHES
Instructor Professor Talbot earned her master’s in Public Administration with a concentration in health from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Prof. Talbot is a community health educator with many years experience in health promotion and corporate health services. Her interests are in program development and supporting internship placements at the worksite. Prof. Talbot coordinates the Internship, and teaches Current Health Issues.
