Department of Sociology Faculty Howard Lune
Howard Lune (Associate Professor) received his A.B. in Engineering from Harvard University, and his M.A. (sociology), M.S. (computer science), and Ph.D. (sociology) from New York University. He teaches Sociology of Organizations, Sociology of Social Movements, Drugs and Social Policy, The City in the Global Environment and Social Research Methods. He served as the Director of Urban Studies from 2003-2006. Prof. Lune's research has included studies of collective organizing in response to HIV/AIDS in New York City, the political context of needle exchange programs, and theoretical work on civil society and relations between states and the nonprofit sector. Prof. Lune has also written on collective responses to AIDS-related stigma and on urban social movements. Prof Lune is the author of Urban Action Networks: HIV/AIDS and Community Organizing in New York City (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007). His work has also appeared in the journals Sociological Forum, City and Community, Social Movement Studies, Qualitative Sociology, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly , Journal of Drug Issues, Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Voluntas, and Contemporary Drug Problems.
