What an M.A. in Sociology Can Do for Your Career

An M.A. in Sociology from WPUNJ makes your resume more appealing and better qualifies you for higher level job opportunities.

Career Possibilities

One of the strengths of the M.A. in Sociology is that it qualifies students for a variety of employment prospects. Graduates of our M.A. program can use their degree to

  • attain positions such as research analyst, demographer, policy developer/director, human resources manager, program evaluator/manager, community planner/developer, and statistician;

  • work in private high schools or junior colleges as teachers, administrators, and advisors;

  • continue their education and earn a Ph.D. or other additional advanced degree.

Career Advancement Opportunities

The WPUNJ setting provides our graduate students with myriad ways to take advantage of career advancement strategies which can enhance a graduating student’s job outlook immensely.

Consider the following tips:

Network

  • Talking to your professors, other faculty, and people within all facets of your social world can be one of the best and easiest strategies for attaining employment. Find out what people are doing, how they obtained their positions, and if they know people interested in the qualifications you have to offer.
  • The Eastern Sociological Society is housed in the WPUNJ Sociology Department, so our graduate students have direct access to the organization and the benefits it has to offer.
  • William Paterson graduate students are encouraged to apply for a Graduate Assistantship. This award not only waives tuition and provides a stipend, but exposes students to the academic affairs within the university and allows for direct communication with notable professionals within the field.
Continually update your resume

  • Graduate studies in our program give students a variety of experiences employers find attractive.
  • Our M.A. students have opportunities to conduct research on their own, in professional internship settings, and to present their findings at sociological conferences.
  • Be sure to include what you do as a WPUNJ graduate student on your resume.
