Defend the Constitution
Oppose the USA PATRIOT Act
Petition to the Montclair, NJ Township Council:
Whereas we, the undersigned, believe that the USA PATRIOT Act threatens many of our cherished rights by:
- Taking away rights of privacy by increasing the legality of phone taps and internet/ e-mail surveillance;
- Taking away rights of privacy by collecting information about books purchased from bookstores or checked out from libraries; medical records; and personal finances;
- Limiting freedom of speech by targeting individuals and organizations that have dissenting views;
- Restricting due process and right to counsel which has already resulted in hundreds of people, particularly people of Arab descent, being detained indefinitely with no trial and no right to counsel.
Therefore, we as residents of the Township of Montclair, call upon our Township Council to join the hundreds of other municipalities throughout the country that have passed resolutions opposing the act.
