WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY
POLITICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT
The program in Political Science at William Paterson University seeks to provide students with the tools for effective leadership in a diverse society and global community. The Department views the public good as essential to private well-being and security. To enable students to contribute effectively and empathetically to the public good, they receive a grounding in and knowledge of the American political system as well as in the politics and cultures of other areas of the world. To prepare students to live and work in an increasingly interdependent global community they learn about international systems of trade, aid, defense, communication and governance. Students are not only provided with the conceptual and analytical tools that will enable them to understand the systems that affect them, but with the skills—verbal, written and technological--that will empower them to succeed in the workplace, graduate school and the professions. Opportunities to practice the democratic arts through debates, simulations, Model UN's, moot courts and a variety of internships, locally and in Washington, DC, play an important role not only in creating effective citizens, but in helping students to secure both summer and permanent employment.
