Latin American Studies Major
Requirements

Curriculum:
Candidates for the Major in Latin American Studies must satisfy a total of 33 credits as follows:

REQUIRED CORE COURSES (15 credits):

  • LAS 201: Introduction to Latin American Studies.
  • SPAN 232: Survey of Latin American Literature (in Spanish) or
    SPAN 301: Masterpieces of Latin American Literature in Translation (in English).
  • HIST 380: Colonial Latin America or
    HIST 381: Modern Latin America.
  • POL 337: Politics of Latin America.
  • LAS 480: Latin American Seminar or an approved 480 course

ELECTIVES FOR THE MAJOR (18 credits): Elective courses must be taken in at least 3 different departments, with a maximum of 6 credits in one department. Electives include the following courses as well as any new courses approved by the Latin American Studies Committee
