Puerto Rico TRIP 2006

SPAIN TRIP 2006

   

STUDY IN

PUERTO RICO!!!

WPU COURSES
All participants must enroll in at least one of the following WPU courses:

SPAN 106 Basic Spanish I and II (6 credits) or
SPAN 111 Basic Spanish II (3 credits)

SPAN 314 Advanced Spanish Grammar (3 credits)
SPAN 302 Twentieth Century Caribbean Culture & Literature (3 credits)
LAS 201 Introduction to Latin American Studies (Non-Western GE requirement—3 credits)

UPR COURSE
All participating students will earn 3 credits from the Interdisciplinary and Multi-Cultural Institute at UPR as part of a seminar on Society and Culture in Puerto Rico. This course will transfer to WPU as HIST 382, a nonwestern G.E course. All students enrolled in the program will take this course. The tuition for this course is included in the price of the trip.

FACULTY
Professors Grisel Maduro and Gregory Shepherd direct the program. They also teach the WPU courses along with Professor Ana Sierra from UPR.

SCHEDULE

Part I Class sessions at UPR
Sat. June 24 Arrival in Puerto Rico & Orientation
June 26-July 24 Classes meet at UPR

Seminar on Society and Culture in Puerto Rico will be offered weekday afternoons, Fridays, and weekends

Part II Class Sessions at WPU
July 31-Aug. 3 Classes at WPU

CULTURAL EVENTS
Participation in the following activities is required for the Seminar on Puerto Rican Culture. Activities subject to change.

· 18th Century San Juan
· El Morro and Old San Juan
· Museo de Arte Puertorriqueño
· Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña
· Porta Coeli and San Germán
· Taíno Ceremonial Park, Utuado
· Museo de Arte de Ponce
· Serrallés Castle, Ponce
· Vieques
· El Yunque Rain Forest
· Hacienda Santa Juanita Coffee Plantation

LODGING
Students will stay at Casa de Huéspedes at the Río Piedras campus of the University of Puerto Rico. (AC, double occupancy)

COST
Includes: UPR tuition for Puerto Rican Culture course, lodging at Casa de Huéspedes, Airfare–Newark-San Juan-Newark, Ground transportation to cultural events, Two meals Mon-Fri., Entrance to sponsored events, Additional speakers, workshops, seminars on Puerto Rican culture and Student health insurance. (Does not include: tuition for WPU course(s), incidentals.) $2850.00
