Bio-sketch

Keumsil Kim Yoon is currently professor of linguistics in the Department of Languages and cultures where she is Director of the Bilingual/ESL Graduate Program. She has trained bilingual teachers from all over the world including France and Canada. She co-authored and coordinated a Title VII Bilingual Teacher Training grant project, funded ($ 500,000 +) by the US Department of Education, and has served frequently as a team leader/evaluator of the Title VII federal grant proposals. Since 1992, she has chaired the Annual Bilingual/ESL conference, one of the most comprehensive and stimulating language education forums in New Jersey, attended by over 300 language educators each year.

She has published widely in nationally and internationally acclaimed journals/collections (e.g. Applied Psycholinguistics, Journal of Pragmatics, International Review of Applied Linguistics). She has presented frequently in national and international conferences (e.g. International Congress of Linguists, International Association of Applied Linguistics, International Pragmatics Conference, MLA), and has been invited to deliver lectures overseas. Her research interests have traveled from morpho-syntax through psycholinguistic to sociolinguistics and pragmatics, always focusing on language as it is used in varied interactional settings. Her current focus is on cross-cultural differences in social interactions and the problems these fascinating differences create for speakers of other languages.
