Academic English Program
Academic English is a support program for multilingual students
from non-English language backgrounds. The overall goal of Academic
ESL is to prepare students, who have been admitted and matriculated
at William Paterson University (WPU), for their first-year composition
(English110) as well as other college classes. The courses are intended
to help students improve their reading and writing skills in academic
English. All Academic English courses earn graduation credits (free
electives).
Course Descriptions
At William Paterson University, Academic English reading and writing
courses are offered at the intermediate (level 1) and advanced (level
2) levels. Placement is determined by student profile information,
Accuplacer test results, and student essay. At each level (1 and
2), students can enroll in a three-credit reading course and/or
a three-credit writing course. An additional two-credit Writing
Workshop serves Academic English students enrolled in English 110
(Writing Effective Prose).
Note: Students enrolled in Academic English courses DO NOT need
to take Basic Skills Reading and Writing classes.
