PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 creates new challenges for K-12 educators and administrators. Every language educator will need to develop the necessary special understanding, skills, and disposition to support the language and academic development of English Language Learners. The 24th annual Bilingual/ESL Conference sponsored by William Paterson University aims to facilitate this learning process.

The conference seeks to enhance the skills required of language teachers and educators to help students meet academic expectations. It offers in-depth applied research, up-to-date pedagogical sessions, topical and thought-provoking plenary addresses, and access to book exhibits. Moreover, it provides networking opportunities among both established and new professionals. It is expected that participants will be able to return to their teaching institutions with new and creative ideas to enhance their own classrooms.

This year’s keynote speaker is Carolyn Graham, the Originator of Jazz Chants. Ms. Graham was a Master Teacher of ESL at New York University for twenty-five years and a Teaching Fellow at Harvard for nine summers. She is an author and now spends much of her time presenting teacher-training workshops around the world. She will deliver a speech entitled The Creative Classroom, Jazz Chants, Music and Poetry for all Ages.

A.     Instructional Strategies for English Language Learners’ Oral and Written Language Development (K-3)

This workshop will demonstrate research- based theory and practice that foster second language literacy acquisition. Useful strategies and techniques will be presented for the bilingual/ESL teachers to enhance the English language learners’ oral, reading, and writing skills in the K-3rd grade classrooms. B. Using Print Media to Teach Second Language Learners—Newspapers in Your Classroom (all age-level)

Newspapers add a real-life application to ESL learning for all age levels. Easy-to-use, hands-on activities feature critical thinking skills, explore reading and listening comprehension, writing, speaking, language structure, vocabulary development, and cultural appreciation.

C. Information Literate English Language Learners (middle-high school)

This workshop will provide suggestions for using the library media center and its resources to help English language learners acquire language and research skills. It will demonstrate how to apply these skills to content area assignments.

D. ESL Teachers and Content Area Teachers/Classroom Teachers: Maintaining Positive Relationships

This workshop will demonstrate how ESL teachers can be proactive in maintaining positive relationships with the content area/classroom teachers. It discusses methods used by the presenters at the Mahwah Board of Education that have been very effective, including ESL Teacher Orientation and communication techniques.

E.     Writing and ELLs in the Elementary School

This workshop will address strategies that teachers could use to teach writing to ELLs. How to motivate students to write in native and second language will be also discussed. Organizers and teacher-made materials will be included in handouts.

G. Content and Language through Learning Community Projects (Higher Ed., Secondary Ed, Administrators)

This demonstration will present specific learning-community projects that integrate computer skills and language instruction and provide ideas for adaptations to other settings. Handouts and Website will illustrate classroom-tested projects, related language skills and rubrics for evaluation.

This workshop is limited to only the first 50 people who will be registered in this session. (Please choose the second choice in case it is filled)

I. Thorough Examination of Displayed Books and Materials

This hour is given for those who would like to thoroughly examine displayed books and learn more about pedagogical materials from representatives. This is not a formal session run by a designated person. However, this will be considered as a regular workshop.

J.     Media Literacy Skills: Essential for Communicative Competence

Media shapes much of our communication today. The ability to understand, evaluate and respond to media constructed forms of communication is essential. This workshop will explore media literacy issues, challenges and skills.

K.     A Pronunciation Guide for ELL Teachers (K-5)

This workshop will attempt to assist the teacher of English to speakers of other languages, grades K to 5, to deal with pronunciation, stress and intonation difficulties which result from native language interference.

L. Literacy in English for Non-literate Newcomers of All Ages.

The purpose of this workshop is to share the components that make West Orange High School’s ESL Program a model resource center in the state of New Jersey.

This meeting is open to anyone who is interested in participating in preparation of the 25th Annual Bilingual/ESL conference to be held in December 2005. Past and current Bilingual/ESL-related issues will be examined, and direction for future conferences will be discussed.
