The English Department at William Paterson University offers a full range of introductory and advanced linguistics courses. Among them are the following:

English 203: "The Structure of Standard English" - An introduction to the structure of standard American English emphasing both grammatical knowledge and intensive practice in manipulation of grammatical structures for clarity, emphasis, and grace.

English 401: "Linguistics and Grammars" - Study of contemporary grammars to understand the structures and functions of the varieties of English.

Sample Syllabus

English 402: "Development of the English Language" - A historical survey of changes in English vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and grammar, including the social context of language change.

English 403: "Grammar and Style" - The study of the contemporary American English sentence in its historical and sociolinguistic contexts, with attention to the structure of the sentence, editing problems for writers, the role of Standard English, ,and variation for stylistic effects.

Sample Syllabus

English 614: "Applied English Linguistics" - A study of modern English grammars (traditional- structural and transformational-generative) and their application to the understanding and appreciation of style in language and literature.

English 618: "Modern English and Its Backgrounds" - Study of the English language from its origins to the present with detailed attention to changes in phonology, morphology, syntax, and vocabulary.
