Joanne Miyang Cho is Professor and Chair of the History Department.  Her several publications probe the politics of civilization in a number of twentieth-century German intellectuals (Oswald Spengler, Ernst Troeltsch, Albert Schweitzer, Karl Jaspers, and Count Hermann Keyserling). She is currently working on a monograph, “From German Guilt to the Idea of Asia in Karl Jaspers.” She is also working on three edited volumes which deal with transcultural encounters between Germany and Asia. One of them, Transcultural Encounters between Germany and India, is forthcoming with Routledge.  Two additional edited volumes concern Germany and China and Germany and Japan.   She is a recipient of several fellowships, including the Fulbright Fellowship, Max Planck Institute for History, the Institute for European History, and the German Academic Exchange Program.  She has served as chair and co-chair of a Columbia University Seminar, “Politics and Society in Twentieth Century” since 2004.
