Critical Languages are languages for which there is a high societal demand and insufficient linguistic expertise in the U.S. In 2008, and with generous support from a congressionally-funded grant, William Paterson University was able to establish its own Center for the Study of Critical Languages to foster and promote interest in:
- Arabic
- Chinese
- Hindi
- Japanese
- Korean
- Persian
- Russian
- Turkish

Mission Statement
The Center for the Study of Critical Languages supports the teaching and learning of these critical need languages within the framework of competencies in the cultural traditions of strategically important regions of the world.
The Center's goals include:
- Supporting state-of-the-art instruction of critical languages through curriculum development and training of college faculty.
- Supporting programs for NJ license-elegible K-12 World Languages teachers of Chinese and Japanese.
- Collecting and archiving instructional materials.
- Promoting student engagement in the critical languages.
- Welcoming partnerships with school districts to establish extended K-16 sequences of critical language study.
Location and Hours
The Center is located in Atrium 215. Our hours of operation are as follows:
Mondays: 1 to 5 pm
Wednesdays: 1 to 5 pm
Fridays: 10 to 4 pm
