College of Humanities and Social Sciences Highlights, 2003-2004

Growth  
(All figures from OIRA's Fact Book 2003-2004.)

  • The College of Humanities and Social Sciences continues to grow, remaining the largest College on campus with a total of 2,780 students or 34.8% of all undergraduates at WPUNJ.
  • HSS has 190 graduate students, the second largest number among the five colleges, representing a 62% growth rate since Fall 1999.
  • HSS houses 3 of the 5 largest undergraduate majors on campus: Psychology, Sociology and English, which together account for 2,098 undergraduate majors.
  • The College's 710 undergraduate courses account for 44% of the University's total Student Credit Hours.
  • The Departments of English, Psychology, and History are among the departments with the highest number of Student Credit Hours on campus and accounted for almost half of all SCH's in the College and 21% of all SCH's campus-wide (Fall 2003).

Serving the Campus

  • The Writing Center has been revamped. Tutors were given a raise in Spring 2003 and the Center received a new printer and computers last year. In Fall 2003 semester, 561 students made 1670 visits to the Writing Center.

  • The American Democracy Project, a dynamic new campus wide initiative under the leadership of Christine Kelly (Political Science), is co-sponsored by The New York Times and aims at raising the level of civic engagement on our campus.
  •  
  • This year, use of the Language Multimedia Lab exceeded its capacity, reflecting growing enrollments in G. E. classes. In Fall 2003, more than 1705 students used the lab, compelling it to make arrangements with other labs in order to accommodate student needs.
  •  
  • The newly staffed adjunct office in Hunziker Hall, furbished with new computers, a printer and copier, has improved support for adjuncts and services for students.

  • HSS departments organized a wide array of discipline-specific seminars and colloquia.
  • History faculty, undergraduate majors and MA students participated in the Regional Phi Alpha Theta (History Honors Society) Conference as presenters and judges.
  • Psychology held the Eleventh Annual Undergraduate Research Conference.
  • Sociology faculty and students presented at the annual meeting of the Eastern Sociological Society.

Curricular Initiatives

  • The M.A. in Public Policy and International Affairs was launched in Fall 2003.
  • The Urban Studies Minor was approved this year and will begin recruiting in Fall.
  • The Liberal Studies Committee developed a proposal for a reconfigured B.A. in Liberal Studies.
  • The Asian Studies Major was approved as a degree program by the Board of Trustees.
  • HSS faculty leads the University in the number of on-line courses developed and offered. The College offered 55 on line courses in Summer and Fall 2004.

Awards and Grants

  • The Asian Studies Program received a second Title VI Grant from the U.S. Department of Education to launch a degree program and to develop South Asian studies as part of the program's offerings.
  • Judy Bernstein (Languages and Cultures) spent most of the year at work in the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University on a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies.
  • Wartyna Davis (Political Science) is a member of a research team awarded $550,000 by the Ford Foundation "Peace and Social Justice" grant to conduct a national study of women of color within U.S. political elites.
  • Terence Finnegan (History) continued a second year of the project, "Our Story: A Place-Based Approach to the Teaching of Traditional American History" in collaboration with the Bergen public schools. Grant activities included a summer institutes for teachers, and on-going teacher workshops during the school year.
  • Brad Gooch (English) was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship for next year.
  • Zachary Morgan (History) received a Woodrow Wilson fellowship to write a book.
  • John Parras (English) was awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts for 2004-05
  • Donna Perry (English) spent Spring 2004 as a Fulbright Fellow in the American Studies program at the University of Rome in Spring 2004.
