To meet the growing demand in New Jersey school districts for certified teachers of Chinese, William Paterson University offers an Accelerated Chinese Language Teacher Preparation Program beginning in summer 2008. Within one year, students who successfully complete this program will be qualified for a Certificate of Eligibility and earn a second B.A. in Asian Studies-Chinese Language Track.


The 30-credit curriculum provides state-approved courses in Chinese language, pedagogy, methodology, and literature, offered in evening, weekend, and on-line format, convenient for the working professional. Partial scholarships may be available.

The Accelerated Chinese Language Teacher Preparation Program is ideal for heritage or native speakers of Mandarin Chinese who currently hold a BA degree and who seek a career in teaching World Language in New Jersey schools.

Prerequisites:

  1. B.A. degree
  2. Permanent U.S. residency or F1 student visa  

Eligibility to teach Chinese (CE):

  • A B.A. degree with a GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • 3 cr. course Methods of Teaching a Second Language
  • Minimum rating of Intermediate-High on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview in Mandarin Chinese. 

Evaluation of international B.A.degrees.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS  

ASN 201 Introduction to Asian Studies . This multi-disciplinary course introduces students to the geography, history, culture, society, economics, and politics of India, China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia.

ASN 270 East Asian Civilization . This course is a survey of East Asian civilization from its formative age to the present. The course focuses on the cultural heritage of East Asia, including Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, and the diverse paths taken by three East Asian societies, China, Japan and Korea, in their efforts to build modern nations. Special attention is given to interaction between the three societies that gave rise to a strong cultural bond in East Asia.

CHIN 221 Chinese Spoken Language. The course develops students’ speaking and aural comprehension abilities in Chinese. Activities such as situational dialogues and class discussion lead towards the development of speaking and listening skills sufficient to handle daily conversation. Chinese 211 or equivalent. CHIN 222 Advanced Chinese Conversation and Composition I . Consolidates the foundations of pronunciation, grammar, and character writing built in the first two years of study. Emphasis on discussing topics of general interest and writing essays. Prerequisite: CHIN 221. In Chinese.

CHIN 223 Advanced Chinese Conversation and Composition II. Provides a wide range of advanced vocabulary and a number of common sayings, as well as a metaphorical use of common words that form part of the verbal and cultural backgrounds of Chinese people. Prerequisite: CHIN 222. In Chinese.

CHIN 301 Modern Chinese Literature in Translation . Introduction to the literature of 20 th-century China. It presents important historical and literary background, discusses literary trends and major authors, and analyzes major literary text in different genres with emphasis on short stories.(Taught in English).

CHIN 302 Chinese Popular Culture. Chinese popular literature, art, film, television, music, posters, and material culture analyzed from the perspective of ideology, politics, ethnicity, race, gender, and sexuality are shaped by and reshaped in popular culture. It will focus on the contemporary popular culture of Mainland China, though attention will also be paid to popular cultures in Hong Kong and Taiwan. In English.

CHIN 310 Advanced Chinese Tutorial. Intended for students developing knowledge of Chinese beyond intermediate level. It focuses on improving the learners’ Chinese language skills to Advanced-Low level specified in the ACTFL (The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Proficiency Guidelines. Within this framework, instruction aims at integrating listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension, and writing skills in order to help learners communicate meaningfully, effectively, and creatively in the Chinese language.

CHIN 363 Methods of Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language. Designed to train students to teach Chinese to speakers of other languages. The course covers the current second-language acquisition research, various instructional strategies, proficiency-based instruction, performance-based assessments, and design of teaching unit and daily lesson plan in alignment with the NJWL framework and national standards for Chinese language learning. The course includes lectures as well as practical classroom experience. In Chinese.

CHIN 375 Contemporary Chinese Cinema. Course analyzes films of prominent A Fifth Generation @ Chinese film makers and discusses their form, cinematic codes, and historical context. (Taught in English).

CHIN 400 Seminar in Chinese Literature and Culture. Chinese literature and culture through reading and discussion of selections of major works in Chinese literature and culture. Examines major trends and issues, secondary scholarship, and research methodology in the field. The seminar requires students to read critically, analyze and write about texts of Chinese literature and culture, using both traditional Chinese research methods and Western critical approaches. Required of all majors who will seek teacher certification. Taught in Chinese.

CISE 419 Methods of Teaching a Second Language in Elementary and Secondary Schools. This course is designed to inform Subject Field (K-12) pre-service teachers of current theories and practices of teaching a World Language is elementary and secondary school. Students will gain in-depth pedagogical knowledge and understanding of language acquisition and literacy development in a second language. Specifically, students will apply their theoretical understanding and pedagogical knowledge to classroom situations. They will analyze and critique curricula, engage in inquiry-driven discussions about theory and methodology, and plan innovative instruction.

CISE 352 Practicum Internship. Practicum Internship . Working with an experienced cooperating teacher and under the supervision of an education professor, students observe the classroom, work one-to-one with students and the classroom teacher, and gradually take on whole-class responsibilities.  Students are required to develop an interdisciplinary lesson plan, do a teacher disposition self-evaluation, and continue to link portfolio artifacts to appropriate standards.  Students will meet periodically in an accompanying seminar to discuss their field experiences.
