Undergraduate ESL Endorsement

STARTING FALL 2015 - Undergraduate ESL Endorsement

The PATSEL, a National Professional Development grant by the U.S. Department of Education, provides academic preparation and scholarships (equivalent to WPU in-state tuition, up to 12 credits) for education majors to pursue an additional ESL certification as an endorsement on initial teaching certifications at the undergraduate level.

Program Requirements:

  • Any Education major
  • A personal interview with the Admissions Committee

Curriculum (15 Credits):

  • LANG 1120: Understanding Human Language (3 credits)
  • LANG 3050: The Structure of Language (3 credits)
  • LANG 3070: Introduction to Second Language Acquisition (3 credits)
  • LANG 3400: The Social and Psychological Processes of Multiculturalism & Acculturation (3 credits)
  • LANG 3410: Integrating Language and Content in the English Language Classroom (3 credits)  

Exit Requirements:

  • Satisfactory completion of the curriculum with a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Language Proficiency Testing: A score of Intermediate High on English Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI) and a score of Advanced Low on English Written Proficiency (WPT)
  • The testing requirements must be met before student teaching begins

Scholarships:

Upon completion of the exit requirements, candidates will be awarded a scholarship (equivalent to WPU in-state undergraduate tuition for 12 credits).
