William Paterson University’s Professional Development for Teacher Educators will consist of a 2 day workshop addressing topics and practices that will best address the needs of English Learners (ELs) in the college classroom. Day 1: February 20, 2015

Discuss key notions such as:

Characteristics of ELs in NJ

ESL and Bilingual Programs in NJ

Language proficiency and content areas

Types of academic literacies

Identifying knowledge, strategies, and skills needed to better serve ELs

Differentiating instruction for content vs. differentiating instruction for language


Day 2: March 6, 2015

Hands-on practice to develop skills in:

Identifying academic language used in content area textbooks

Analyzing examples of a thematic units for ELs with different levels of English proficiency

Analyzing your current course syllabi to include working with ELs

Identifying appropriate topics about ELs to include in your course syllabi
