Center for Lesson Study, College of Education, William Paterson University
In depth 3-day hands on and interactive learning on lesson study process, planning research lessons, and observations and discussions of research lessons.
Lesson study is recognized by the National Staff Development Council as one of the most powerful designs for building professional learning communities. Teachers engage in lesson study to systematically examine instructional methods, content, curriculum, and student learning/understanding in order to improve classroom teaching and learning and achieve their educational goals. Participants at this Institute will learn how to plan research lessons, how to implement and observe them, and how to discuss them. In addition, they will learn how to conduct kyozaikenkyu (instructional material investigation) that is important to improve teachers’ content and pedagogical knowledge as well as improve their learning process through lesson study.
The 3-day institute in summer will provide:
1. Interactive presentations and discussions on system and process of lesson study
2. Workshops on specific skills involving lesson study such as: planning, observing, and discussing research lessons, effective use of black & white board, investigation of the Common Core State Standards.
3. Participants will be divided into several small groups and will develop research lessons, which will be presented and discussed at the end of the Institute. The lessons will then be implemented from September through November 2011 in real classrooms. Then the participants will meet again on December1, 2011 for presentations and discussions of the research lessons.
Many of the examples and materials that will be discussed during the institute will focus on elementary and middle school mathematics. However, teachers from other subject areas are welcome to participate in the institute. Also we will support developing lessons of participants’ interest.
Participation in the institute as a team is encouraged but not required. Also, the institute is not limited to teachers from the state of New Jersey.
