Subject Field Certification (K-12)

K-12 Subject Field Specialization is a 30-credit program that qualifies students to become eligible for certification as a teacher for specific content areas on the middle and secondary school levels. This program uses students' subject area specialization as a framework for learning about methods and materials for teaching a specific content area in middle/junior high and high school. Field-based experiences are an integral part of this program so that students can apply learning from coursework to content area classrooms.

Education Advisor: To be assigned in a letter upon formal acceptance.
Steps to Formal Acceptance and Continuation in the Undergraduate K-12 Secondary Certification Program
  1. Enroll in an appropriate academic major as indicated by the state (see list or contact the Advisement Center).
  2. Enroll in or successfully pass ANTH 202 (or a social science diversity course from approved list). Approved Social Science courses include: AACS 315; ANTH 356; POL 321; SOC 337; and, WS 307.
  3. During the above course, attend an orientation meeting and complete a K-12 Application Form, pass the Writing Assessment and complete the Speech and Hearing Assessment (X3685).
  4. Complete PSY 110 successfully.
  5. Obtain a NJ Substitute Teaching Licence.
  6. Achieve a 2.75 gpa or higher, and you will receive a letter accepting you into the program, (and the name of your education advisor); at that time you will be able to register for CIED 203.
  7. The PRAXIS exam must be passed before entering EDUC 419. (effective Fall 2008)

CISE 335 Working Within Schools: Schools as Institutions and Communities * 2
CISE 352 Practicum Internship*

Plus ONE of the following courses based on subject field major*:
