Entry Requirements
The requirements for admission are the following (please be advised that these requirements are subject to revisions):
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale or a master's degree from an approved college or university with a graduate grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
  • A score of 400 on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or 450 verbal on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • An essay (click here for essay topic).
  • An interview with counseling faculty.
  • Two professional recommendations.
  • An undergraduate background that includes coursework in psychology and the social sciences. Deficiencies may be made up in consultation with the program coordinator.

Important Information Regarding School Counseling Certification

Due to the new rules, effective January 2004, a New Jersey Standard teacher's certificate is no longer required to obtain School Counseling Certification.

Program Concentrations

Student will select concentration after obtaining fifteen (15) credits in the program. Concentrations include School Counseling and Agency Counseling.

Exit Requirements
  • The student must complete 48 credits.
  • Two (2) semester sequence of practicum/intership (school concentration requires school placement and agency concentration requires agency placement).
  • Satisfactory completion of a comprehensive examination which carries no course credit, and is required of all students.
  • Satisfactory completion of a counseling portfolio. Requirements will be provided.
