Programs

Three Pathways to the Principalship

  • A two-year M. Ed. program that will result in both principal certification* and supervisory endorsement**
  • A two-year 30-credit program that will result in principal certification*
  • A one-year program for supervisors with four or more years of experience that will result in principal certification*

*Candidates must pass the SLLA exam in addition to completing the program.

**To obtain the supervisory endorsement, candidates must hold a standard NJ instructional or educational services certificate or its out-of-state equivalent, and complete three years of successful, full-time teaching and/or educational services experience before applying for the supervisory endorsement at the completion of the program. Teaching and/or educational services experience completed in a NJ public school must have been under an appropriate NJ certificate.  

Application Process

Principal Licensure Programs

Applicants for Cohort IX must call to get an appointment for an interview. This cohort will begin in Summer 2008. Enrollment limited to 20-25 applicants.

Supervisory Endorsements

12-credit program for candidates who have earned a master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university and who have completed three years of full-time teaching under an appropriate instructional or educational services certificate or its out-of-state equivalent.

You must apply through graduate admissions for either of these programs prior to taking any of the department's four courses. The program advisor is Naomi Pagano.

* NJ requires that all candidates pass the SLLA Licensure Exam in addition to completing these programs.

Licensing

New licensing regulations, N.J.A.C. 6A:9, were adopted by the New Jersey State Board of Education, effective January 20, 2004. The web site for the Office of Licensure and Credentials is currently being updated as of February 2004.
