What is professional enrichment? Cotsakos College of Business PROFESSIONAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM:
The Cotsakos College of Business undergraduate programs are guided by a framework that includes, among other things, the professional enhancement, readiness, and awareness of our student body. As such, the professional enrichment initiative encourages the provision of opportunities for our students to meet and network with area specialists, hear business leaders speak, become involved in work related activities such as internships, practicum, and job shadowing, and attend various seminars and forums that deal with their professional development and/or contemporary work related issues. What is required in order to meet the professional enrichment expectations?
All Cotsakos College of Business students are required to complete the professional enrichment component of their educational experience prior to graduation; students must earn professional enrichment points as they progress through their business program towards graduation.
Accumulated points are utilized in partial fulfillment of the course requirements for MGT460 (Business Strategy and Policy), which is a required course for all undergraduate accounting, business administration, and professional sales majors. Specifically, ten percent of the grade earned in this course is a function of the number of enrichment points earned: eight points are required to earn full credit. Less than the required number of points results in partial credit being granted. Several additional courses have a “per semester” point requirement; please check with the instructor. Please refer to the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section in the current schedule (accessible from http://www.wpunj.edu/cob/COB_New/professionalenrichment/profenrich.htm via the link on the left side of that page) for additional information.
How are enrichment points earned?
Students earn enrichment points through their involvement in supporting Cotsakos College of Business sponsored and co-sponsored activities and include, but are not limited to participation in:• “Careers” workshops,Students should always bring their University identification card (ID) to any enrichment activity they attend. The ID card will be scanned, and enrichment points entered into a database, for the purpose of monitoring the number of points earned. Failure to bring the ID card will result in no enrichment point credit for the activity.
• The business leaders, finance, or related large scale symposiums,
• Small group workshops and forums, such as the stress management or resume writing seminars.
• The “job shadowing” program, where a student meets with a chosen business leader, on-site, and “shadows” the business leader at the workplace for one day. This provides the student with an inside glimpse of what the profession of choice entails, and an opportunity to spend one day in the company of a senior management professional in the workplace.
CREDIT-EARNING ENRICHMENT WORKING OPPORTUNITES:As alternative learning experiences, COB students are encouraged to explore credit worthy internship and practicum opportunities, which may be utilized as upper level COB directed elective coursework upon the approval of the sponsoring department Chair and the Dean. Internships are individualized structured work experiences where a student is placed in an organization for the purpose of working under a supervisor and gaining hands-on experience in the area of interest. Alternatively, a practicum is a guided work experience conducted within a group framework, where groups provide consultation to small businesses, under the mentorship of a faculty sponsor. Additional information may be obtained from any COB office.
