What
is VITA?
VITA stands
for : Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. This is an IRS/NJ Department
of Taxation sponsored program for assisting people who do not
know how to do their taxes or cannot afford to have them done
by a professional get their tax returns prepared.
Why
we do it?
We do VITA
as a service to the University community and the community at
large.
How
it is operated?
The University
is a registered VITA site with the Internal Revenue Service.
If need be, the Internal Revenue Service does provide training
to tax preparers and also supplies us with necessary IRS tax
literature.
Who
supports it?
The program
is supported by the College of Business. The College provides
an office and administrative support. A professor in the
Department of
Accounting and Law coordinates the program as a service to the
University and the community pro bono. Tax preparers are recruited
from our students who have completed Tax I course. Training
sessions are held for students to familiarize them with the
tax preparation software as well as updating them on the changes
in tax law. The students volunteer their time and they are the
backbone of this program. Without their support the program
cannot be offered.
The program is also support by Intuit Corporation who have graciously
supplied us with free tax software every year for many years.
We are greatly indebted to this Corporation.
