William Paterson University Guitarfest 2014 is dedicated to the memory of John “Jack” Villani, a guitar major at WPU who passed away unexpectedly last year. We in the guitar department want to acknowledge John and say how much he is missed in our program. Also, we area announcing the creation of the John Villani Memorial Fund, established in his memory and provided as a support for guitar related activities at WPU.  (For information on donating, please contact professor Handy.)

Carlos Barbosa Lima and Larry Del Casale

Barbosa Lima duo

WPU Guitarfest 2014 is very fortunate to host a return engagement of internationally acclaimed Brazilian guitar virtuoso Carlos Barbosa Lima. In the year following the Latin Grammy nomination of his ZOHO recordings album Beatlerianas, an all Brouwer tour de force including the Havana String Quartet and guitarist Larry Del Casale, Mr. Barbosa Lima and Mr. Del Casale have been playing concerts and enjoying the critical approval the album has gotten. Statements such as: “Guitar and string quartet aficionados with a taste for 20th century should revel in this disc. The playing is superb throughout and the recording lifelike” (Musicweb International blog) are common.

At our festival, Barbosa Lima will play his solo arrangements and be joined for duets with Mr. Del Casale.

Bradley Colten

Bradley Colten is a brilliant young player who has appeared around the United States and internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. He is a founding member of the critically acclaimed, award-winning flute/guitar partnership Arc Duo, a pair whose debut CD was hailed in Soundboard Magazine as an "indispensable addition to the guitar's discography”.

At our festival this year Mr. Colten will perform works by the American composer Ernst Bacon (1898-1990), whose guitar output has only recently been unearthed by Mr. Colten during his dissertation research. Bacon’s deceptively simple melodies and rhythms position him as a “Copland of the guitar”, creating a distinctively American style of classical guitar music.

Seth Himmelhoch

Seth Himmelhoch is professor of guitar at William Paterson, and he is the founder and director of the Suzuki Guitar program at the JCC/Thurnauer School of Music in Tenafly, NJ. He serves as chair of the Guitar Development committee of the Suzuki Association of the Americas. As a Suzuki guitar teacher for over twenty five years, Mr. Himmelhoch has been involved in contributing to the creation of the Suzuki Guitar School repertoire, in performing on the listening CDs, and in the instruction of many students from the earliest to the latest books.

At the festival, Mr. Himmelhoch will screen the DVD “The Sounds of Success”, a short documentary on the Suzuki guitar school, and will then lead a seminar and open discussion of the method and the video.
