Dr. Carol Frierson-Campbell
Music Department Chair
Thank you for visiting the website of the Department of Music at William Paterson University! Our department offers students a comprehensive musical education. Whether your ultimate goal involves classical music, jazz, popular music, or some combination, we have a program designed to meet your needs.
At the undergraduate level we offer the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Music. The two Bachelor of Arts degrees—Musical Studies and Musical Studies with Popular Music Emphasis—focus on musical study rather than performance. The Bachelor of Music programs provide professional training with a performance focus for degrees in Jazz Studies, Music Education, Music Management, Performance, and Sound Engineering Arts.
At the graduate level we offer three concentrations within the Master of Music: Jazz Studies (available with a performance or arranging emphasis), Music Education, and Music Management. We also collaborate with the Cotsakos College of Business for their MBA with a Music Management concentration.
Performance opportunities are available for music majors as well as and non-majors. Yearly performances include large and small ensemble concerts as well as our Midday Recital Series offered every Thursday at 12:30 pm, our New Music Series offered on various Monday nights throughout the school year, and our Sunday afternoon Jazz Room Series, in its 29th year as of 2012. Special performances have included the 2010 Detroit Jazz Festival, Avery Fisher Hall in March of 2011, and our Collage Concert in April of 2011.
