Professor Frizzell received her M.Phil. (1999) and Ph.D. (2004) in 20th century and contemporary art history from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York with her dissertation “Nancy Spero’s Installations and Institutional Incursions, 1987-2001; Dialogues Within the Museum, and Elsewhere.” Prior to her career as an art historian Frizzell was a studio artist and teacher, receiving an M.A.T. (1975) in Fine Arts Education, printmaking and sculpture, from the Rhode Island School of Design and her B.A. (1973) cum laude in studio art from Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA.
From 1990-1994, Frizzell was Curator of Exhibitions and Education at the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut, where she organized exhibitions of contemporary art as well as eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century art. Her previous experience also includes serving as Gallery Director of The Connecticut Gallery (1986-1990) and adjunct instructor of art history at Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Connecticut.
Her books include Humphrey Spender’s Humanist Landscapes: Photo-Documents, 1932-1942 (Paul Melon Centre for Studies in British Art & Yale University Press, 1997), Ann Chernow: Fictitious Icons (Gallery of Contemporary Art at Sacred Heart University & Queens Museum of Art, 1998) and Mircea Suciu; How Deep the Rabbit Hole Goes (NY: SLAG Gallery, 2008). Frizzell’s essays on contemporary artist Nancy Spero include, “Nancy Spero’s War Maypole: Take No Prisoners,” Cultural Politics v. 5, no. 1 (Winter 2009); “Nancy Spero’s Museum Incursions: Isis on the Threshold,” Woman’s Art Journal v. 27, no.2 (Fall/Winter 2006); “Alchemical Secrets: Spero’s Fragmentation and Recreation,” Nancy Spero: A Continuous Present (Kiel: University of Kiel & Dusseldorf: Richter Verlag, 2002) and “Nancy Spero’s Cabaret,” Unfolding Perspectives (Helsinki: Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, 2002). Frizzell has written articles for New York Arts Magazine, Woman's Art Journal, Cultural Politics, and The Structurist (University of Saskatchewan).
Prof. Frizzell’s scholarly interests include feminist art practices and theory, the development of ecological/reclamation art, analyses of documentary photography in relation to text, and contemporary artists’ critiques, interpretations, and re-presentations of museum collections within institutional environments. Her current art historical research focuses on the unique fifty-year artistic relationship between the activist/figurative painters Leon Golub (1922-2004) and Nancy Spero (1926-2009).
