Hello and welcome to the College of the Arts and Communication at William Paterson University’s webpage — providing you with a glimpse through the portal of creative query and collaboration, artistic exploration, individual expression and critical thinking in the pursuit of nationally recognized degree programs in Communication, Music, the Visual and Performing Arts. The College of the Arts and Communication is one of five Colleges at the University — the second oldest of the nine state colleges and universities in the Garden State — and the foundation for so many of our graduates who have gone on to successful careers and lives in the many areas of study, unique to the College.
We provide our students with outstanding, relevant and timely programs on both the undergraduate and graduate level, delivered by an international faculty whose experiences encompass professional practice, and teaching on the world stage. These are vital characteristics of the College exemplified in each division, folding the strength and understanding of a liberal arts comprehensive university from a real-world, real-time perspective in the nurturing of our students toward artistic and scholarly excellence in preparation for life’s opportunities and employment success.
The Power Art Center and Ben Shahn Galleries and studios provide visual arts students with outstanding studio and exhibition spaces working with a dedicated faculty of Artist/Scholars, who continue to transcend creative boundaries in the studio classroom and beyond — to the benefit of our students. Our NASAD accredited Visual Arts program is home to the CNA & CCART. The Center for New Art (CNA), one of two Centers distinct to the College, is a studio/lab dedicated to staying ahead of the curve in the discovery of new modalities in visual arts expression. The Center is a fusion of traditional and new digital processes like 3D printing technology in the creative process of art and form creation. Additionally, the Visual Arts program offers pre-professional concentrations in Animation, Graphic Design, Furniture Design, Photography, Printmaking and a full range of traditional studio programs. The Center for Chinese Art (CCART) is quickly becoming the hub for the visual arts and culture of China, with programs of exchange across disciplines led by leading and emerging creative thinkers in the arts — infusing our campus with historical and contemporary perspectives from the five-thousand-year old culture — the CCART is the first of its kind in the United States.
The faculty and staff of our Communication program are leaders with nationally recognized industry experience in the arenas of Broadcast Journalism, Public Relations, Communication Studies and Media encompassing Radio, Television and Film production and Theatre & Comedy, giving the College another unique footprint in higher education, distancing the University from other institutions throughout the region and the nation. Our facilities are state of the art — meeting and exceeding industry levels like our newly installed High Definition Television studio, managed by a professional staff with industry experience and expertise in the field. The line of professional practice engagement is the constant line that connects these programs delivered by an outstanding and committed faculty with experiences working for the world’s major networks and agencies encompassing Broadcast Journalism, Public Relations and Filmmaking. Many of our alumni have gone on to illustrious careers across the many disciplines that are the hub of our forward thinking and progressive programs in Communication from CNN to NFL Films.
Our nationally accredited Music program is one of the University’s most noteworthy, with major areas of study in Music Management, Performance, Music Education, Popular Music, Sound Engineering Art and the prolific and legendary Jazz Studies program, hailed as a “Trailblazing Jazz Education program” by Downbeat magazine. It is the flagship of the College, with a forty-year history of groundbreaking achievement focused on the study of America’s one true original Art form — Jazz. It is an internationally recognized program on the level of iconic institutions, and other conservatory based and historic programs in music higher education internationally. The music program is anchored by an outstanding and dedicated faculty and staff, which include world-renowned artists providing the timely and relevant foundation essential for success in the industry and in music education — leading and informing our students by example.
The education and preparation of students seeking professional practice opportunities in a comprehensive liberal arts institution is central to a philosophy dedicated to our student’s success — in the studio/classroom and the world beyond our campus. The possibility of that success is forged by access to our amazing faculty with the added support of area specific professional staff, new HD Television studios and Recital and practice spaces, an outstanding library and studio/smart-room facilities in a university setting that is as comfortable as it is convenient to the world’s largest media capital — located just 21 miles west of New York City.
Our philosophy is built on individual achievement and collaborative opportunities across disciplines, to the benefit of the cultural life of the university community, the new global society — and importantly, your personal growth and success.
Please accept my personal invitation to visit our campus and discover the exciting possibilities of an education at William Paterson University’s College of the Arts and Communication.
