University Theatre - Communication Dept.

Under the auspices of the Theatre faculty of the Communication Department, University Theatre at William Paterson University presents a varied and ongoing selection of plays,  musicals, and live comedy on campus. The program strives to offer students from all disciplines opportunities to participate in and observe the riches that comprise theatre, as they integrate the art into their academic experience.

Since 2001, the program has presented a Pulitzer Prize-winning play, a Pulitzer finalist, works from three of the most prolific American playwrights of the past fifty years, as well as plays dealing with foremost issues of our time. Recent prior shows include: Proof by David Auburn; Defying Gravity by Jane Anderson; The Shape of Things by Neil Labute; What I Did Last Summer by A.R. Gurney; Metamorphoses by Mary Zimmerman; the musical Quilters by Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek, Milcha Sanchez-Scott’s Roosters, andThe Baltimore Waltz by Paula Vogel.

The spring 2008 season includes Art by Yasmina Reza, a witty commentary on art and friendship, and Talking With by Jane Martin, a dynamic series of women’s monologues to further the campus celebration of March as Women’s History month.

The second annual Comedy Festival in December 2007 gathered students from campuses across the state to compete in stand-up comedy. On the first night, a panel of professional comedians voted Katie Decker of Gloucester Community College the “Funniest Female College Student in NJ,” and Noah Houlihan from Richard Stockton College the “Funniest Male College Student in NJ.” On the final night, a different panel of judges voted Fairleigh Dickinson University-Madison the “Funniest College in NJ,” and FDU’s Gordon Baker-Bone the “Funniest College Student in NJ.” Connected to our ground-breaking comedy curriculum, our comedy festival promotes the skills of stand-up and sketch comedy writing and performing in an intercollegiate setting.

The University Theatre program is built on a foundation of inclusiveness, and seeks to serve and involve the entire William Paterson community and neighboring communities. With the support of the University, the program collaborates with students and faculty from all departments to provide extra curricular events, such as panels, post-performance discussions and informative lobby displays, that coincide with productions and enhance the learning experience.
