Visiting Artists

Visiting artists will be invited to participate in exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations, and workshops. Such programs highlighting Chinese art and culture may lead to reciprocal agreement with other universities and venues that promote not only individual artists but future intellectual and artistic exchanges as well.

Shanghai William Chinese Art Foundation Distinguished Visiting Artist Series:
A Drop in the Ocean: Celebration of Chinese Art Master Liu Haisu's 120th Anniversary

Mr. Chen, Ms. Liu and Ms. Zhang are invited to participate the Commemorative activities, symposium and presentation at the UN, Sina Vision and China Art Institute in New York City this week. We are fortunate to have these notable proponents of Chinese art visit William Paterson University to present A Drop in the Ocean: A Celebration of Chinese Art Master Liu Haisu's 120th Anniversary and answer questions from our community and the media.

Wuli Zhang, Professor and Dean from Nanjing Sanjiang University of China

Wuli Zhang, was invited to conduct an artist residency, a Life drawing Demonstration and an Artist Talk for CCART on April 13, 2016

Wuli Zhang, Dean of College of Art at Sanjiang University, Nanjing, China; Professor of Art at College of Art of Nanjing Normal University; Vice Chair of Jiangsu Artists Association. Graduated with a major in painting in 1980 from Nanjing Art Institute. Visiting artist to the Vladimir National Normal University, Russia in 2001. Graduated with a degree of Master of Art in Painting in 2004 from Nanjing Art Institute. Professor Zhang served as Vice Chair of the Jiangsu Painting Art Committee; Vice Secretary General of Jiangsu Painting Association; and Associate
Dean of College of Art at Nanjing Normal University.

Jianming Zhao, Professor from Nanjing Sanjiang University of China

Jianming Zhao, was invited to conduct an artist residency, a Chinese Ink Painting Demonstration and an Artist Talk for CCART on April 12, 2016

Jianming Zhao, Chinese Painter, well known for his Chinese traditional paintings of flowers in the freehand brushwork style. He is honored with the title of Class-A National Painter. Graduated with a major in Chinese painting in 1980 from Nanjing Art Institute. He is currently an endowed professor of College of Art at Sanjiang University; an endowed painter of Nantong Academy of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy; Artistic Director of Jiangsu Aitall Cultural Industry Co., Ltd.

Figuring the System: The Digital Compositions of Jiawei Gong

Jiawei Gong, was invited to conduct an artist residency, an exhibition, and an Artist Talk for CCART on April 4, 2016

Jiawei Gong is a digital media artist and an art professor of Texas Tech University. In the past 20 years, Gong has practiced in both applied and fine art disciplines. His exhibition record to date includes over 70 group and solo exhibitions regionally, nationally and internationally in the U.S., Europe, and China. He has won a number of awards at the international film festivals and art competitions.

Down to Earth: Ancient Towns and Villages of China
-- A Photography Exhibition by Kemin Dong

Kemin Dong was invited as a visiting artist by CCART from February 7 - 25, 2016 for an exhibition and an artist Talk at William Paterson University.

Kemin Dong, Director of Chinese Ancient Town Institute in Xian, China. His photographs have been selected by national exhibitions and received numerous excellence and golden awards. He was awarded excellence in photography by Chinese National Academy of Arts, by China Art Photography Society, and by 
Chinese Photographers, the top Chinese photography magazine.

Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Demonstration:

Peichen Xu and Mengjie Ma was invited as a visiting artist by CCART on February 4, 2016 for Chinese painting and Chinese Calligraphy demonstration at William Paterson University

Peichen Xu, Professor of School of Fine Arts of Nanjing Normal University, China. He serves as Vice President of Jiangsu Society of Chinese Painting and President of Jiangsu Research Institute for Bird-and-Flower Paintings.


Mengjie Ma, an outstanding calligrapher and poet, currently serves as Deputy Director of Chinese Couplet Calligraphy Association, Deputy Secretary General of Yanhuang Art Foundation and Research Fellow of Tianjin Chinese Art Research Institute.

Shanghai William Chinese Art Foundation Distinguished Visiting Artist Series:
Artists from the Printmaking Academic Committee of the National Artists Association of China

This group distinguished artists from China, who are Golden and Silver Award Winners of National and International Printmaking Exhibition, visited William Paterson University for an Exhibition, Lecture, Demonstration and Panel Discussion from October 23 to November 1, 2015.

Qiongde Cao, Vice Chair of Artists Association of Guizhou Province, President of Guiyang Academy of Art, Executive Vice Director of the Guiyang Museum of Art. His works received the Gold Award at the 17th National Printmaking Exhibition, Lu Xun Printmaking Award, and China Publishing Government Award.


Chao Chen, Researcher at the China Jiangsu Printmaking Academy. His works received the Gold Award at the 16th National Printmaking Exhibitions; the International Award at the 41st Asian Modern Arts Exhibition in Japan, and the Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards at the Jiangsu Printmaking Exhibitions.


Yanpeng Li, Vice President of Hebei Art Academy, Shijiazhuang, Hebei. He received the the Silver Prize at the 1996 13th National Printmaking Exhibition; the Bronze Prize at the 1998 14th National Printmaking Exhibition; The Gold Prize from the 1999 8th National Constellation Awards.


Jianshan Wang, is currently Professor and Dean of School of Fine Arts at Guizhou Nationalities University. Wang received numerous awards including Bronze Prize at the 9th National Fine Arts Exhibition; Silver Prize at Qingdao International Biennial Printmaking Exhibition; Lu Xun Printmaking Award for 1980 1990.


Chengyou Yu, is currently President of the Printmaking College of Heilongjiang. He has won numerous awards, including Gold Prize at the 1992 Japan-China Printmaking Exhibit; Silver Prize at the 1996 13th National Printmaking Exhibition; 1999 Lu Xun Printmaking Award for 1980-1990.


Minjie Zhang, is currently Professor and Director of the Mural Department, China Academy of Art, Hangzhou. He has won numerous awards, including Grand Prize at the 1992 11th National Printmaking Exhibition; and Award of Excellence at the 2015 15th Krakow International Triennial Printmaking Exhibition.

Zhiping Lu, A Master Printmaker from Shanghai, China

Zhiping Lu, President of Shanghai Printmaking Association was invited for an Artists Residency Program, an International Printmaking Exhibition, Art Demonstration, and Lectures from January 18-26, 2015. His work has been exhibited in 6th -10th China National Art Exhibition, Tokyo Fine Art College, Japan, University of South Carolina, US, and China etc.

Shanghai William Chinese Art Foundation Distinguished Visiting Artist Series:
Xinggang Wang, A Contemporary Sculpture and Professor from the Capital Normal University, Beijing, China

Xinggang Wang was invited as a visiting artist by CCART from November 6 to December 12, 2014 for Sculpture Demonstration: Life Drawing and artist residency at William Paterson University.

Xinggang Wang, is a member of both the Chinese Sculptors Association. His work has been selected and received awards in both China and overseas, published in Chinese and American art catalogs and newspapers, and collected by many galleries, universities, cultural institutions and private collections.


Shanghai William Chinese Art Foundation Distinguished Visiting Artist Series:
Crossing the Pacific to the Atlantic: Conversations with the Masters

The Center for Chinese Art at William Paterson University cooperates with China International Culture Association to create and develop the distinguished visiting artists program base on America. This group master from China and from American, who are horned by Chinese Government to be invited for Lecture, Demonstration and Panel Discussion in New York city and New Jersey from November 4 to November 12, 2014.

Gongkai Pan, a master of Chinese painting, Vice President of The National Artists Association of China, former president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, and former president of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Son of the renowned painter Pan Tianshou.


Lusheng Chen, Deputy Director of the National Museum of China, Vice Chairman of the Beijing Artists Association, is a famous art critic, scholar and a painter in China. He considers himself a "contemporary literati painter".


Laurel Reuter, the founding director and chief curator of the North Dakota Museum of Art, has curated countless exhibitions. She was invited to be a Jury for Smithsonian Institute /Washington DC (2010) and received a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in NYC (2011).


Qinghe Liu, a Researcher of China National Art Institute and Professor and Associate Dean of Chinese Painting College, the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China is the First-Class of the National Artist in Contemporary Ink Painting Artist in China.

Collision and Confluence: Chinese-American Art Faculty Demonstration and Presentation

The presenters are primarily US-based Art professors of Chinese origin, who have considerable teaching and art creative experiences in both China and the United States. They visited William Paterson University for an Exhibition, Lecture, Demonstration and Panel Discussion from November 6-8, 2014.

Josh Z. Yu, Professor and Director of Special Projects, Savannah College of Art and Design is for a Chinese ink painting demonstration and presentation at 2:30-4:30pm, Wednesday, November 5, 2014.


Yifei Gan, Professor Hoverd Committee College is for a painting demonstration at 10:00pm-12:00pm, Thursday, November 6, 2014.


Fang Chen, Professor of Graphic Design at the Pennsylvania State University is for a graphic design presentation at 2:00pm-04:30pm, Thursday, November 6, 2014.


Ying Tan, Professor of Art at University of Oregon is for a computer animation presentation at 2:30pm-04:30pm, Thursday, November 6, 2014.



Mingsheng Liu and Yong Liu Distinguished Visiting Artist Series:
Jianshan Wang, a Master Printmaker from Guizhou Minzuo University of China

Jianshan Wang, Professor and Dean of School of Fine Arts at Guizhou Nationalities University, and Vice Chair of Guizhou Artists Association was invited to present an printmaking Reduction Woodcut Demonstration and presentation for the faculty and students as well as for the local committee from October 26-28, 2014.

JiangShan Wang, received numerous awards including Bronze Prize at the 9th National Fine Arts Exhibition; Silver Prize at Qingdao International Biennial Printmaking Exhibition; Lu Xun Printmaking Award for 1980 – 1990.

Xiaofu Yu, a Master Painter from Shanghai, China

Xiaofu Yu, a famous Chinese artist and Vice President of the Shanghai Artists Association, was invited to present an oil painting demonstration for the faculty and students as well as for the local committee on Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

Xiaofu Yu is an iconic figure in China’s Shanghai School art scene. In 1984, his painting Tenderly I Knocked on the Door had created a nationwide sensation in the Chinese art world. Yu also won the Bronze medal of the Seventh National Art Exhibition in 1989; Gold medal of the first Shanghai Art Exhibition in 2001; and silver medal of the Tenth National Art Exhibition in 2004.
