Publications

As a source of information and education the Center for Chinese Art will produce and publish books which aim to bridge the gap and spur artistic dialog between Chinese and American cultures.  It is hoped that the Center’s publications will gain support and exposure leading to further production of exhibit catalogs, textbooks, art history, theory and criticism, as well student journals and documentation.

Qi Baishi: The Soul of the Chinese Painting
by Zhiyuan Cong

With encouragement and support from our donors, Prof. Cong has compiled an album of selected paintings of Qi Baishi with a study of his life and art. With his thirty-year teaching experience in Chinese painting, both in China and in the United States, Prof. Cong has prepared an analysis and study of Qi Baishi, with emphasis on his place in the history of Chinese freehand flower and bird painting, on the process of his maturity as an artistic master, and on the technical and aesthetic characteristics of his art.  To provide focus and convenience for readers who are interested in learning Chinese painting, Prof. Cong has selected only paintings of flowers and birds. Within this selection, attention is given to various subjects and styles.  It is hoped that this volume will be a reference book and textbook for scholars and students to enjoy and study Chinese ink painting.
