Workshops Empower Students

The mission of William Paterson's Career Development Center's to empower students to define and achieve their career goals. By taking advantage of the Center's broad range of services, students may maximize career- planning and job-hunting skills.

One of the Center's many offerings is this extensive job-readiness and career-planning series of workshops. Topics range from "Resume Writing" to "Career Options/Job Market Trends" to "Job Hunting Strategies;" additional workshops include a "Careers In…" series, which focuses on various majors and features alumni and professionals as guest speakers.

Workshops are collaboratively scheduled with academic departments, administrative areas and/or student groups throughout the year. Call the Career Development Center at 973.720.2282 to schedule a program for your group.

EFFECTIVE RESUMES AND COVER LETTERS
Create a personalized, skills/accomplishment-based resume that produces results.

INTERVIEWING TECHNIQUES
Learn the basics of interviewing techniques as well as how to approach recruiters at job fairs.

JOB SEARCH, CAREER FAIR AND NETWORKING STRATEGIES
Do you really know how to develop networking contacts and tap into the hidden job market that exists beyond publicized jobs in newspapers, Internet sites and career centers? Learn how to use a myriad of job-hunting
resources, including how to make the most of career fairs.

INTERNSHIP ORIENTATION
This workshop prepares you to secure an internship in which you can earn academic credits while gaining professional work experience in a field of interest. Find out about academic prerequisites and how to register for credits, search for suitable positions, market yourself, and make the most of your experience.

CREATING A PERSONAL CAREER PORTFOLIO
Learn how to build a successful career while at William Paterson! Discover how to document and market your valuable skills and accomplishments.

MOCK INTERVIEWS
Test and practice interviewing skills with the support of peers and career counselors to build confidence and give you the edge needed for today's competitive job market.

CHOOSING A MAJOR/CAREER FIELDCo-sponsored with the Academic Advisement Center, this workshop helps students who are undeclared or are between majors to understand how to go about selecting a major and/or better define career goals that match their interests, skills, abilities, and values.

PLANNING FOR GRADUATE SCHOOL
Co-sponsored with the Office of Graduate Studies, this session provides tips and advice on how to evaluate, select, apply for, and improve your chances of gaining acceptance into a graduate school of choice.

CHANGING CAREERS
It typically takes more than coursework or a degree to make a successful career change. Learn what steps you need to take, how to articulate transferable skills, how to add value to an employer to increase your marketability.

BALANCING WORK, FAMILY AND LIFE ISSUESIn today's fast paced environment a myriad of demands is placed upon us daily. Can we get it all done and remain sane? Participate in this interactive session where success and coping strategies will be shared.

ENHANCING YOUR MARKETABILITY
What do employers really look for in new hires? Why do some candidates get more job interviews and offers? Find out what you can do to increase your competitiveness.

CAREER OPTIONS/JOB MARKET TRENDS
A college degree will increase the variety of career options open to you. Learn how to explore, expand and narrow your range of choices. Find out about labor trends in your field and which industries will be expanding and/or contracting.

BUSINESS ETIQUETTEDo's and don'ts that make the difference. From cell phones, to email, to attire, there are proper protocols. Learn them, observe them and derive the benefits from doing the "right thing."
