Resources and Services
The mission of the Career Development and Gloria S. Williams Advisement Center is to empower students to define and achieve their career goals. Maximize your career planning and job hunting skills by taking advantage of our broad range of services:
Career Library
An up-to-date resource center contains an extensive selection of career material and literature, job hunting guides, employment listings, graduate school information, salary surveys and instructional videotapes. A new online service is also availabe which allows you to access our career library electronically at Career Insider.
Job Listings
Many local and regional employers contact our office for their hiring needs. These listings can be viewed on our homepage at the University's website, under WP Job Connect, and also in the Career Library.
Career Planning Guides
Begin your senior year by reading the outstanding planning guides ordered just for you (Job Search Handbook for Educators or Planning Job Choices). They will take you step by step through the job search process, offer insights into planning for graduate school and tips on how to market yourself most effectively.
Job Matching & Resume Writing
It is highly recommended that students open a WP Job Connect account. By doing so this on-line service will enable you to create a professional quality resume and register with the Career Center for computerized job referral.
Academic Advising
Professional advisors are available to discuss major/minor choices and the registration process. Undeclared students beyond their first year and between-majors' students beyond their first year can see a professional advisor in the Center for course selection and administration of their Alternate PIN number. Otherwise students are advised by a faculty-member within their academic major.
Declaration of Major/Minor
Students in good academic standing may apply to declare or change one or more majors after completing at least one semester at William Paterson University. Declaration/change of major is completed online by logging into WP Connect and completing a Change of Major Request Form. Students are notified by email of their chairperson's decision and are assigned an advisor in the new major upon acceptance. A declaration/change of minor form is available in the Center.
Technology Services
Our computer lab is set up to help students work on their WP Job Connect account, take a quick interest test and gain immediate feedback. Students can also view academic records and registration information.
Interest/Skills Testing
For students who need assistance clarifying their career goals, a variety of interest inventories are available. Counselors will recommend the appropriate instrument and interpret the results. All incoming freshmen take the Self-Directed Search during summer orientation, the results of which can be used to assist in choosing a major, developing career plans and for your student portfolio.
Personalized Career Guidance
Unsure about what types of jobs your major qualifies you for? Don't know where or how to look for a job? Getting interviews, but no offers? Professional counselors will schedule day or evening appointments to help you with decision-making and career-pathing, resume writing, interview skills, strategies to penetrate the job market and much more.
Drop-in Service
Stop in any weekday during the semester, between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday, for immediate feedback or information on your short-term advisement and career-related needs and concerns, last minute interview advice, resume critique, etc. No appointment needed!
Job Fairs
Underclassmen, in addition to seniors, are encouraged to attend these campus events to network and explore a wide variety of current and potential employment opportunities. Check our homepage, bulletin boards and public relations materials for programs and dates, including graduate school and job fairs at other locations.
