The Department of Languages and Cultures provides courses in second or foreign languages, from basic to advanced levels, for all students at the University. Languages taught include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
In addition to language majors in French and Spanish, our interdisciplinary majors provide students with thorough expertise in historical, political, cultural, and linguistic areas.
The department is the home of the Spanish and French Clubs for students majoring in Spanish or French and Francophone Studies, as well as those interested in Hispanic cultures. The clubs help to plan academic, cultural, and social activities. Several Latino fraternities, sororities, and honor societies are also associated with the department. Every year it also sponsors the Annual Bilingual/ESL Conference and the Poetry Recitation Contest, and cosponsors the Annual Círculo de Cultura Panamericano conference on Spanish and Latin American literature and culture.
Language majors make students valuable and competitive in a global context. Graduates of the University's languages and cultures programs have advanced to careers in:
- bilingual media production
- bilingual advocacy
