Welcome to the General Education Web Site. Here we will be actively exploring issues and models in General Education. William Paterson University is poised to strengthen and improve the General Education program and enable students to benefit from exciting and innovative approaches to achieving the goals of G.E.
We will explore the question of: What is G.E.? How can it be assessed? What directions should we be traveling to achieve a more effective program?
What is G.E.? It is a program for student Growth and Experience. It is an opportunity for us to Generate Excitement in learning. It gives students the tools for Grand Exploration of disciplines. G.E. should Greatly Enrich the undergraduate experience. We need to maintain Great Expectations in order to keep the program a Garden of Excellence.
It is not a Gross Exaggeration to state that this will be a difficult undertaking. There are many individuals on campus who have worked extensively on General Education and have enabled it to evolve into the comprehensive program now in effect. The Academic Plan (1992) states:
"There is little doubt that the General Education curriculum at WPC is innovative and, in terms of such pioneering efforts as Racism and Sexism and the Non-Western requirement, ahead of its time. Furthermore, the breadth of the program, especially the 21 credit humanities core represents a commitment to implementing the State mandated two-year liberal arts requirement that is intellectually and programmatically strong. However, this pioneering and outstanding G.E. program can be improved in a number of ways and could become one of the truly outstanding G.E. programs in the country, if it is given the attention and resources it deserves."
I am looking forward to working with all of you to make this a Genuinely Extraordinary program.
