Services
It is said that E.O.F. is like
a family that takes a genuine interest in all of its members. Below are
some of the services that demonstrate our interest in each student.
Individual and Group Counseling
Each student is assigned to an E.O.F. counselor who provides academic,
personal, financial, and social counseling. The counseling staff also
prepares and presents various workshops to facilitate students' transition
to college.
Six Weeks Summer Program
This mandatory component of E.O.F. is only for the first time freshman.
Our goal for the summer program is to prepare the first time student for
the realities and personal requirements of the college experience. Students
attend classes in mathematics, reading and writing. There is also a course
concerning college survival skills and personal development.
Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society
The Educational Opportunity Fund Program (EOF) of William Paterson University
is a charter membership to Chi
Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society. Its purpose is to promote continued
high academic standards, foster increased communication among its members,
and honor the academic excellence of those students who utilize developmental
education support services. Students who hold a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A.
for two consecutive full-time semesters are eligible for membership. Chi
Alpha Epsilon was formed to recognize the academic achievements of students
admitted to colleges and universities via developmental program pathways
such as the Educational Opportunity Fund Program. Since the chapter's
inception, the EOF Program has inducted 37 students as members to the
Beta Zeta Chapter of Chi Alpha Epsilon. Chi Alpha Epsilon was founded
at West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 1990, and in 1995 it was
adopted as the Honor Society for developmental program students throughout
the United States. Among the sixty-eight chapters of Chi Alpha Epsilon
throughout the United States, eight chapters are at colleges and universities
in the state of New Jersey.
The Undergraduate Research and
Mentoring Program
The program will select students in the Educational Opportunity Fund Program
and minority undergraduate students who historically have been, and continue
to be, under-represented in master's and Ph.D. degree programs. It aims
to identify, recruit, prepare and assist undergraduates who will matriculate
and graduate from graduate degree programs.
It is designed to expose undergraduate students to the
research environment by connecting them with faculty mentors who can excite
them about research and guide them into an understanding of the importance
of pursuing graduate degrees. In addition, faculty mentors will help students
to develop a realistic perspective of the challenges they will face while
pursuing a Ph.D., and provide technical assistance with the graduate school
application process.
The program provides students with a supportive, challenging
and motivational environment that encourages the pursuit of graduate study.
Students will be provided with academic support services such as counseling,
individualized and group tutoring, career guidance and academic mentors.
A special effort will be made to customize the approach to the personal
needs of each student.
E.O.F Peer Network
The E.O.F Peer Network is designed to support the E.O.F freshmen in successfully
negotiating the university environment. Through the "bridging"
of our program's freshmen over to their new college experience, upper-class
students provide guidance, information, direction, support and friendship
during the first year experience. Through increased emphasis on information
sharing, it is expected to augment use of on- and-off campus resources
and increase participation in campus life (tutoring, workshops, advisement,
internships and extracurricular activities). The Peer Network is an initiative
that promotes a welcoming and comfortable environment through positive
role modeling.
Book Deferment and Book Loan Programs
This unique service allows students to obtain books for the classes that
they are enrolled in for the each semester. The Book Deferment process
charges EOF students individually based upon available funds awarded by
the financial aid office and after the student's university account balance
is paid. The Book Deferment account is set up at the beginning of the
semester and is a charge account only with the university's bookstore.
The Book Loan provides students the opportunity to borrow books from the
program's used or new book library.
