Learning Literacies Strategies Team

In 2004 the Provost appointed a group of faculty and staff to develop a plan for integrating information literacy and technology skills into the curriculum. Over the past two years, the group has evolved into the
Learning Literacies Strategies Team under the leadership of Library Director, Anne Ciliberti. Based upon research on best practices in academic institutions, an analysis of General Education course outlines and extensive discussion and debate, the LLST determined that information and technology skills are so closely aligned to critical thinking and numeracy that the four competencies should be studied together and that efforts should be made to ensure the successful integration of all four skill sets into the curriculum.

Adopting the definition of information literacy from the Association of College and Research Libraries, we have expanded this definition to encompass four basic competencies: information literacy, technology skills, critical thinking and numeric literacy. The University’s mission of educating students for lifelong learning mandates that all four skill areas be addressed in the curriculum and the IL Team is actively involved with identifying methods of ensuring effective integration within the curriculum.
