In the course of the past 150 years, women's collegiate fashion has changed in appearance, materials, methods of production, functionality, and symbolic meaning. The changes have been triggered largely by social and political forces, but also by economics and industry, as well as advances in science and technology. In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of William Paterson University, this exhibition presents a survey of the evolution of clothing worn by college women. It draws on archival materials dating from the Paterson Normal School to the University today. It is a vibrant and engaging story set against the shifting background of a dynamic American Culture. The story of women and their fashions in many ways reflects the history of the University as well as American culture.
