The Sagacious Stephen Sondheim, a Sondheim Symposium and NETWORK Regional Conference at William Paterson University, located just 20 miles west of New York City, is a two-day academic celebration of the life and legacy of Stephen Sondheim. The event, on 14 and 15 February 2008, features lectures, panels, paper presentations, master classes and performances, all culminating with a lecture presentation by the master. Additionally, participants will have an opportunity to see a preview performance of the Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George. Stephen Sondheim is widely seen as his generations leading writer of the stage musical. Described by Frank Rich in the New York Times as the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American musical theater, he is one of the few people to win an Academy Award, multiple Tony Awards (seven, more than any other composer), multiple Grammy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize. His works span a half century and include (as composer/lyricist) A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, and Sunday in the Park with George, as well as West Side Story and Gypsy, for which he wrote the lyrics. William Paterson University is perfectly located in a scenic suburban area just 20 miles west of New York City.
