Dr. Joel Craig Davis, a native of Sylacauga, Alabama, is currently Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Trumpet at The William Paterson University of New Jersey in Wayne, New Jersey. In addition to those responsibilities he is also brass coordinator for the music department, and Co- Faculty Advisor of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Music Fraternity. He is also Adjunct Professor of Trumpet at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey.
Dr. Davis holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School (1997), where he was awarded the Gluck Fellowship for Performance, and the following degrees from The Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester: Master of Music in Trumpet Performance (1988), Awarded the Performer's Certificate in Trumpet Performance (1987), and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with an emphasis in K-12 Instrumental Music (1987). He also attended the following institutions: Jacksonville State University, (Alabama); Ithaca College; and the College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. His major trumpet teachers have included: Larry Black, Charles Geyer, Barbara Butler, Marie Speziale, and Edward F. Treutel. His major conducting teachers have included: Mallory Thompson, Donald Hunsberger, and Eugene Corporon.
Dr. Davis' professional teaching experience includes appointments as Director of Bands, Hempstead Public Schools, Hempstead, New York; Trumpet Faculty, College Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division, Cincinnati, Ohio; Instructor of Trumpet, National Music Camp, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Interlochen, Michigan; Assistant Band Director and Instructor of Trumpet, Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina; Teaching Assistant, Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York; and clinician for public schools and education conventions throughout the United States.
Dr. Davis is currently an active free-lance musician in the New York Metropolitan Area primarily as a soloist and participant in chamber music concerts. His past performance experience includes: The Wayne Chamber Orchestra; The New Jersey Symphony; Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Pops; Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra; and The Rochester Philharmonic, (New York). He has recorded with Pro Arte, performed live concerts on public radio, taped for PBS and NBC (both live and delayed television broadcasts), and performed with Eric Kunzel, James Conlan, Jesus Lopez-Cobos, David Zinman, Mark Elder, Philip Bosco, Doc Severinson, Wynton Marsalis, Rita Moreno, Pete Fountain, Andre Watts, Art Farmer and many other world famous artists.
Dr. Davis' professional affiliations include The International Trumpet Guild, Music Educator's National Conference, Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Music Fraternity, New Jersey Music Educator's Association, New York Band Director's Association, and the American Federation of Musicians.
